The winged, mythical quadruped with leonine head shown seated on its haunches upon a waisted rockwork base, its ferocious face molded with pronounced eyes and mouth wide open in a roar exposing the fangs, below bifurcated horns and a flaming crest rising from the neck, the body and stand glazed with blue streaks and splashes of green, amber and straw

Lot Essay

This figure is unusual in its addition of blue to the usual combination of green, amber and straw glazes. The absence of glaze on the wings and crisply carved base enhance their sculptural quality
