Lot Essay

This version of the Discobolus differs from the most well known example (found in 1781), in that the figure's head, which was associated anyway should probably be facing to his right. However this example was acquired by the British Museum, whereas the Villa Palombara example was privately held by the Massimo family making it virtually inaccessible for connoisseurs.
This model was also reproduced by J Chiurazzi & Fils of Naples during the 19th century and appears as number 349, Discobole in their 1900 catalogue.
