A LOUIS XV GOLD-MOUNTED SHELL CARNET-DE-BAL SET WITH MINIATURES
with the charge and discharge marks of Julien Alaterre 1768-1774, maker's mark rubbed with a 'C' as second letter of two, the miniatures English School, circa 1770
Slightly tapering rectangular étui-à-tablettes, the front and rears sides of gold and shimmering abalone shell lines alternating with gold piqué lacquer lines, obverse and reverse of cover applied with pierced gold inscription SOUVENIR D'AMITIE within reeded c-scroll borders, the obverse of the base centred by a glazed oval portrait miniature of a lady, in gold-bordered lilac dress with drop pearl pendant at corsage, gauze scarf and pearls in her upswept hair, within a two colour gold chased border, the reverse with a glazed oval portrait miniature of a gentleman in blue coat with silver buttons, white waistcoat and powdered hair en queue, similarly mounted in a hinged frame, the gold mounts chased with a laurel band twisted around reeding; gold capped pencil and four-leaved tablets inside
