The bas-relief medallion, framed in golden Sienna marble, is inspired by a celebrated Roman painting discovered in 1759 at Gragnano, near Pompeii and illustrated in O.A. Bayardi's, Le Pitture antiche d' Ercolano, Naples, Vol.III, (1757-1779). An allegory of Love, popularly known as the Cupid Seller, recalls the gift of the ancient Gods in distributing love into the world of mortals.
