Post Lot Text
"Beckmann has depicted a scene from Giuseppe Verdi's opera, Rigoletto, in this print. We see Rigoletto, the court fool of the Duke of Mantua, and his daughter Gilda, who has fallen in love with the Duke against her father's wishes. The scene is presented as though we are sitting in the audience just below the stage. The faces are dramatically lit from below, accentuating and distorting their expressions. In the background is the partially obscured figure of the conductor, who bears a strong resemblance to Beckmann's friend, Ugi Battenberg." (Schulz-Hoffmann and Weiss, p. 393)
