4 parts in one volume, 2o (447 x 290 mm). 4 engraved sectional titles, 213 numbered engraved plates, 7 in the letterpress, engraved head- and tail-pieces after William Kent (plates 13 in part 3 and 4 in part 4 torn, some plates bound upside down in part 4, engraved title for part 2 bound in after title for part 4, a very few text leaves with marginal tears). Original sheep-backed marbled boards, uncut (hinges cracked). Provenance: Earl Fitzwilliam (bookplate); Milton, Peterborough (bookplate).
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of Isaac Ware's translation made from the original Italian edition from 1570. The title borders and plates are reverse productions on copper of the original woodcuts of 1570. The unsigned plates are by Ware. Fowler 229.
