FOUR 'CHIPPENDALE DIRECTOR' PATTERN HALL CHAIRS
The chair back is gothic-fretted with 'picturesque' ribbon-scrolls in the eclectic mid-18th century manner designated as 'Modern' in Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-maker's Director, published in three editions between 1754 and 1762. In particular it relates to a 1759 'Hall chair' pattern, incorporating an heraldic shield, published in the Director, 3rd ed. 1762, pl.18
This set of four may have originally been part of a set with the pair formerly in David McAlpine's collection at Fawley House, Oxfordshire, sold Sotheby's house sale, Fawley House, 14-15 October 2003, lot 77. Another set of four related hall chairs was sold by the late Samuel Messer, Christie's, London, 5 December 1991, lot 59.
