OLMEC BLACKWARE BOWL
EARLY PRECLASSIC, CA. 1200-900 B.C.
Of hemispherical form carved on one side with a stylized, squared eye with a tripartite 'flame brow', the excised area filled with red cinnabar.
Early Formative blackware vessels from Las Bocas and other Central Mexican sites are often decorated with boldly carved, highly stylized motifs which certainly documented Olmec religious beliefs.
