Lot Essay

This fish plate was most likely acquired by President Grant and his wife, Julia, during a visit to China in 1879. While it was probably purchased to accompany the presidental Rose Medallion pattern service, the Grants may have also given it to their daughter, Ellen Wrenshall Grant Sartoris, as a gift upon their return.
