Lot Essay

The present work shows the artist's wife Alice with the couple's first child, John. Sir John Rothenstein (1901-1992) became the longest serving Director of the Tate, having held office between 1938 and 1964. This painting was reversed and developed for the 1903 painting of the same title which is now in the Tate.
