Stephen Hazell Snr. first advertised himself as a chair maker in 1846, when he was 27 years old. His son Stephen Charles (born 1846) worked with his father until 1875 when he began working on his own account. He continued as a chair maker until 1892. Both of the Hazells produced the same signature in the barrel turning situated on either side of the tablet splat and this provides a distinctive indentification feature of their work. In addition to their stamp a general precision of construction and a lightness of structure epitomize these Oxford windsor chairs.
