[FRENCH--CONSTITUTION.] Loi. Constitution Françoise. Donnée a Paris, le 14 Septembre 1791... Décret de l'Assemblée Nationale, du 3 Septembre 1791. Pau: Pierre Daumon, 1791.
4o (238 x 189 mm). 78 pages. (Some pale dampstaining.) Original wrappers painted in the "tricolor" (blue, white, red) of the French flag, fragment of printed spine label (some rubbing). Provenance: purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 23 September 1957.
The wrappers, painted in the colors of the French flag, reflect the spirit of the text. Numerous editions were printed in 1791 of this, the second constitution of the Revolutionary Era, which established a limited monarchy and the Legislative Assembly. The origins of the "tricolor" French flag date to 1789 and reflects the union, at the time of the Revolution, of the color of the King (white) and the colors of the city of Paris (red and blue).
