[FRENCH ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT.] -- [CAILLOT, Jean Baptiste (?)], n.p., 1769.

4o (288 x 190 mm). 190 (of at least 289) leaves. 106 pen and ink color illustrations (6 full-page and 100 half-page). Modern vellum binding.

A series of religious allegories and renditions of important Biblical episodes, executed by a gifted amateur (the illustration on page 89 is signed and dated "Jean Baptiste Caillot, 1769"). Each page is numbered, but there are frequent gaps in the sequence, omitting text leaves, but apparently not the illustration. The illustrations and accompanying texts deal with the Passion, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus, as well as moralistic allegories intended to show proper and improper forms of conduct. The illustrations include a great variety of representations from every day life: country and society dances, fighting between drunkards, medical consultations, a theater performance, a group of card players and many others. Sold not subject to return.
