Title with watercolor border and engraved hand-colored floral decorations mounted, 3 division titles similarly decorated, one leaf with hand-colored engraved figures of birds and flowers mounted. 20th-century blue morocco, edges gilt, by Riviere & Son; red morocco edged chemise and slipcase. Provenance: Mortimer L. Schiff (bookplate); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 19 November 1958.

AN IMMENSE CALLIGRAPHIC EXERCISE by Paul-Charles Hamon, typographer from Angers. Chateaubriand's complete text of Les Marytrs (1809) is here reduced in microscopic calligraphy to a mere 216 pages from its original two octavo volumes. The work is followed by a translation from the Book of Job and two other short texts, both illustrated with title borders and engraved cut-outs.
