DRAKE, Sir Francis. The World Encompassed...Offered now at last to Publique view, both for the honor of the Actor, but especially for the stirring up of heroicke Spirits, to benefit their Country...Collected out of the Notes of Master Francis Fletcher, Preacher...and compared with divers others Notes that went in the same Voyage. London: Nicholas Bourne, 1652.
4o (199 x 145 mm). Folding engraved hemispheric map by Robert Vaughan inserted (see below). (Without A1 blank, foxing, scattered spotting.) Old blind-panelled calf (rebacked, extremities a bit rubbed).
Third edition of The World Encompassed (following editions of 1628 and 1635). This work is one of three separate volumes issued by Bourne 1652-1653, which together comprise a collected edition of Drake's voyages under the general title Sir Francis Drake Revived (Church 526; Sabin 20840). This, the second volume in the series, was compiled by Francis Drake, nephew of the late explorer, and narrates Drake's memorable voyage of 1577-1580, in which his five vessels raided Spanish outposts and supply routes on the Pacific coast, claimed California ("New Albion") for the British crown and returned via the Pacific and Indian Oceans, making Drake the first English captain to circumnavigate the globe. The compiler extols the "happy successe" of "that rare and thrice worthy Captain... in first turning up a furrow about the whole world," an accomplishment that "doth not onely overmatch the ancient Argonauts, but also outreacheth in many respects, that noble Mariner Magellanus... But hereof let Posterity judge" (p.2). Alden & Landis 652/75; Church 526 (three parts); Hill p.86 (first edition); Sabin 20840; Wing W-3586.
[With:] Engraved map by Robert Vaughan (active 1622-1678) entitled "A New and Accurate Mappe of the World, drawn according to the best and latest discoveries that have been made" (the sheet: 191 x 260mm, the plate: 166 x 251mm). A map prepared for the 1628 first edition of The World Encompassed (Sabin 20853; Church 413), deriving from the important world map in John Speed's Prospect (London, 1627; see Shirley 317). Vaughan's elegant engraving features a decorative border, representations of the four elements at the top, flanked on the sides by small oval portraits of Drake, Magellan, Thomas Cavendish and Olivier Van der Noort; in the lower portion are small diagrams of solar and lunar eclipses. As in the Speed map, California is depicted as an elongated island. Other captioned North American localities are Hudson's Bay, Virginia, Florida, New France and New England. The same map was used in Giovanni Botero's Relations of the most famous kingdoms (London 1630) and in Robert's Merchants Map of Commerce (London 1638; 1671--see lot 441). Shirley 326; Wagner Northwest Coast 304.
