A COLLECTION OF WORKS BY JAN BOGAERTS (LOTS 176-178)
Jan Bogaerts' delicate flower still lifes stand out because of their striking attention to detail, bold colours and carefully counterbalanced compositions. Bogaerts, born in Den Bosch in 1878, attended the Koninklijke School voor Nuttige en Beeldende Kunsten in his birth city between 1893 and 1899. He spent four years working in the studio of the fin-de siècle artist Antoon van Welie (1866-1956) and also received tutelage from him at the Den Bosch academy from 1897 until 1899.
The present collection of paintings by Jan Bogaerts was collected by Mrs Margaretha Schwarz around 1930. Following her studies in dentistry, Schwarz married a Dutch diplomat who took her on his longstanding assignment to Peking. Following her return to The Netherlands she befriended Jan Bogaerts and became very fond of his art. Bogaerts was invited to her house in Wassenaar and commissioned to paint her family's portraits (fig 1) and to represent various objects in her house. Each of these paintings is of the highest quality and reflects the artist's exceptional eye for detail.
