A CAUCASIAN SILVER GILT AND NIELLO SET OF HORSE TRAPPINGS AND SADDLE
CAUCASUS, DATED AH 1309/1891-2 AD
The leather covered wooden saddle with very high cropper and back, the front, back and protruding panels overlaid with silver and decorated with niello chequered designs within engraved gilt meandering vine borders, the front also with an inscription cartouche above a raised rosette, leather straps along the lower edge with steel stirrups damascened in silver with floral motifs, the straps also with niello and gilt silver buckles and buttons, together with further straps with silver trappings to go around the tail of the horse, and a complete bridle and bit with similarly decorated fittings

The saddle is inscribed safiyun (?) Ahmad Hassan, probably the owner.
