Of baluster form with a flat strap handle and slightly curved spout, painted in blue, yellow, ochre and green with scrolling fruiting foliage, the reverse with a label named for S · de · pomis (?) in blue gothic script, on a waisted circular foot with a band of blue crossed ornament (tip of spout restored, section of neck restored, restored chipping to upper rim and footrim)

Lot Essay

See Rudolf Drey, Apothecary Jars (London, 1978), p. 224, where he describes a syrup which could once have been stored in this drug-jar; 'Pomis compositus Regis Saporis, syrupus de', a 'syrup having purgative action, prepared from senna leaves, borage, apple juice and other ingredients'.
