A VENICE BERETTINO-GROUND ARMORIAL OVIFORM WET-DRUG JAR

With a double loop handle issuing scroll terminals and upright spout, the jar named for ·S·D·CICOR·SEM· on a scrolled banner, above an escutcheon with a coat of arms with ochre-coloured lions in a draped interior, flanked by ochre strapwork, the body decorated with continuous scrolling foliage and tendrils, on a short circular foot (minor glaze chipping to tip of spout, rim with two short hairline cracks)

Lot Essay

This albarello was intended to hold chicory seeds. A similar armorial example in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, is illustrated by Jörg Rasmussen, Italienische Majolika (Hamburg, 1984), p. 247, no. 165.
