    Lot Essay

    The sitter was a cousin of Pope Clement XI and became Cardinal Bishop of Sabina in 1711. He was a great patron of ecclesiastical literature, and left a valuable collection to the Vatican upon his death. Cardinal Albani also edited a number of volumes, including the letters of Clement XI (1724), the Menologium Grecorum (1727), and historical memoirs of Urbino (1722-24), the city of his birth.
