A LOUIS XV TWO-COLOUR GOLD AND LAPIS-LAZULI SNUFF-BOX
MAKER'S MARK OF PIERRE-FRANCOIS DRAIS, PARIS, 1771-1772
Oblong with cut corners, the cover, base and sides set à cage d'or with ten lapis-lazuli panels, the mounts chased with laurel swags and foliage, the cover with a foliate border, fully marked and signed DRAIS A PARIS
Pierre-François Drais became master in 1763. His name appears frequently in the Menus-Plaisirs du Roi lists as a supplier of gold boxes to King Louis XVI, between 1774 and 1782.
The form of the present box can be considered to be Drais's trademark. He used the multi-sided format to frequently mount miniatures in his boxes. He also used hardstones as can be seen in the example in the Louvre set with herborized agate and dated 1770-1771 (S. Grandjean, Catalogue des tabatières, boîtes et étuis des XVIIIème et XIXème siècles du musée du Louvre, Paris, 1981, p. 85, no. 84.)
