    Lot Essay

Gladstone's second ministries from 1880-1885 and 1886 saw him beset with problems. He was forced to send in troops against Arabi Pasha to protect Britain's interests in the Suez Canal, and thereafter to put the country under protectorate. The handkerchief shows Gladstone dealing with his inheritance from Disraeli.
