VEGETIUS RENATUS, Flavius (fl. end of 4th-beginning of 5th century). De re militari libri quatuor, and other texts. Edited by Guillaume Budé (1467-1540). Paris: Christian Wechel, 1535. 2° (329 x 216mm). Roman and Greek types. 120 full-page woodcuts (including one repeated twice), one half-page cut, numerous text diagrams, Wechel device on title and final verso. (Two marginal wormholes in first quires, narrow dampstain in a few upper margins.) Contemporary calf, sides ruled in blind with gilt fleurons at centre and corners, red leather spine label (rubbed, rebacked, recornered and repaired). Provenance: de Firmend (early title inscription) --Mansencal 1603 (gift inscription from Innocent [?] dated 1602 at end).
The fine woodcuts in the present, third Wechel, edition, appeared in earlier Wechel editions and derive from Erfurt and Augsburg editions. Mortimer, Harvard French, 487; Murray, Davies, French, 563.
