Lot Essay

An attribution to Agostino da Lodi has been suggested on the basis of stylistic similarities with his study of a young man in Berlin (inv. 53-1881; H.-T. Shulze Altcappenberg, Die Italienischen Zeichnungen des 14. und 15. Jahrhunderts im Berliner Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, 1995, pp. 118-20) and with his Allegorical Scene in Dresden (inv. Album Ca 3. fol. 158r, no. 112; C. Bambach, 'Drawings in Dresden: Newly Identified Works by Italian Masters', Apollo, January 2008, p. 59). The latter drawing also bears an inscription in capital letters, strikingly similar to that on the present drawing, which reads 'VER'.
