JIAQING FOUR-CHARACTER MARKS IN DOUBLE SQUARES AND OF THE PERIOD (1796-1820)
Each bowl and cover is brightly and finely enameled with a different scene from Xixiangji ('The Romance of the Western Chamber') and an inscription referring to each scene respectively taken from the original play written by Wang Shifu (1250-1307?). Together with a famille rose bowl and cover similarly decorated without inscriptions. The bowl and the cover both have Qianlong six-character marks written in underglaze blue.
Bowls: 4¼, 4¼ and 4 5/8 in. (10.8, 10.8 and 11.8 cm) diam
