Calderinus, an Italian humanist, was a prolific classical scholar who also published commentaries on Juvenal, Ovid, Propertius and Statius; a commentary on Suetonius was left unfinished when he died of plague in Rome in 1478, at the age of only 34 or 35. A manuscript of the commentary on Martial, presented to Lorenzo de Medici, with corrections and additions in Calderini's own hand, survives in the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana in Florence. The work was first printed at Rome by Johannes Gensburg in an edition dated 22 March 1474, reprinted shortly afterwards in this edition (which takes the Rome edition as its copytext) and reprinted again in Venice in September 1474. Many editions of Martial, beginning with the Venice edition of 1480, also contain Calderini's commentary alongside the text. H *4236; GW 5887; BMC V, 230 (IB. 20220); Pellechet 3158; Goff C-37.
