A British manufacturer and Radical and Liberal statesman, Richard Cobden has been heralded as the greatest classical-liberal thinker on international affairs of his age. He was associated with John Bright in the formation of the Anti-Corn Law League in 1838, which was aimed at abolishing the Corn Laws (trade barriers designed to protect grain prices), and ultimately establish a fully free-trade economy. He was also central to negotiating the Cobden-Chevalier Treaty, a Free Trade treaty that was signed between the United Kingdom and France on 23 January 1860.
