Lot Essay

As a topographical painter, Rosier was extremely versatile; he travelled extensively through North Africa and Egypt, across France and around Venice and Constantinople searching for visually captivating scenes. It is for his Venetian works that he is best known. His artistic skill ensured that he won medals in 1876 and 1889 for his depictions of the city. This atmospheric painting of Venice depicts the Molo at Dawn: under the glow of the rising sun Venice begins to come to life.
