Lot Essay

The sitter depicted in the present work may be Charles Goodwin Ridgely (1784-1848), an officer in the United States Navy who was made Captain in 1815 and whose portrait was painted by Gilbert Stuart around 1820. This hypothesis is supported by a label on the reverse from Baltimore, Ridgely's hometown.
