NOTE:
According to Muromachidono Gyoukou Okazari-Ki, on 26 October 1437, Ashikaga Yoshinori (1394-1441, the sixth shogun) invited Gohanazono emperor (1419-1471) to his house where there were two dragon paintings hanging on the wall. It is likely that those paintings are this lot.
In Higashiyama Collection of Treasures, this lot was first in the collection of West-Honganji temple, then in one of the houses of Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598), recorded as no. 12 in the Chinese paintings collection.
Soami (1472-1525) was a Japanese painter and landscape artist, and the grandson and son of Noami and Geiami, who were painters and art connoisseurs. Soami excelled in Chinese landscape techniques and developed his characteristic style which influenced Japanese painters of the generations that followed.
