Lot Essay

A very similar composition with slight deviations is in the Museo Civico di Bassano del Grappa, Castelnovo di Isola Vicentina, as German School 16th Century (inv.no. 228, measuring 42 x 34 cm). Another similar composition, with a former attribution to Jan Wellens de Cock, is in The Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit (inv.no. 44.259). However, here Saint Anthony is not depicted. All three compositions are thought to be inspired by the woodcut by Albrecht Dürer (B. 104), which can be dated circa 1500.
