Lot Essay

A graduate of Cogniet, Lapostolet was inspired to concentrate on plein air painting. He sourced his subjects from his homeland in Burgundy for his first studies, but soon travelled extensively through France, Italy and Holland. He painted by the Seine and on the canals of Venice, and honed his skill by viewing the works of the greatest European landscape painters of the 17th century. He is best known for his atmospheric river scenes.
