Lot Essay

Clare Rojas’s seminal figurative paintings draw heavily on folk art tradition, as her bold colors and contours are reminiscent of woodblock printing and other accessible forms of image-making. In line with this way of working, Untitled (Interior with girl, bear and banjo) from 2004 depicts what is likely to be a self-portrait, given that Rojas is also a musician who plays the banjo.
