The present work is a copy painted in the late 1940s of an earlier painting circa 1930 of Helen Anrep, the lover of Roger Fry and patron of the Euston Road School of painters. The work is listed in Vanessa Bell's inventory of pictures at Charleston in 1951 as Helen (2nd version).
