Originally opened as an oyster bar, Rules was established in 1798 by Thomas Rule and remains London's oldest restaurant. In its two hundred year history it has been frequented by many great artists, writers and actors such as Charles Dickens, William Thackeray, H G Wells, Laurence Olivier, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, to name but a few.
