Lot Essay

The elegant colt Isinglass (1890-1911) was a Triple Crown champion in the 1890s who dominated racing in a decade which saw some of the greatest horses of the Victorian era. Major wins included the New Stakes (1892); Middle Park Plate (1892); Newmarket Stakes (1893); 2,000 Guineas (1893); Epsom Derby (1893); St. Leger Stakes (1893); Eclipse Stakes (1894); Princess of Wales's Stakes (1894); Ascot Gold Cup (1895); 6th U.K. Triple Crown Champion (1893). His world record for career earnings remained unbroken in England for 57 years.

Sent to Cheveley Park Stud near Newmarket for breeding duty, Isinglass sired three British Classic Race winners, Cherry Lass, Glass Doll, and Louvois. He also was very successful as a sire of broodmares, notably as the damsire of Prince Palatine. His skeleton is in the Natural History Museum, London.
