As a pupil at the Munich academy, subsequently studying under Albert Zimmermann and Andreas Achenbach, Unterberger travelled extensively. He spent some time in Milan in 1858, returning to Munich in 1859, and travelled to Norway and Denmark in 1860 before settling in Brussels. In the works completed during his travels to Naples and Southern Italy, the artist attempted to capture on canvas the light atmosphere and warm climate of the region. By the 1880s Unterberger had exhibited extensively throughout Europe and became internationally famous.
