Lot Essay

According to Mrs Russell Barrington, the picture was 'presented to the Queen' by the artist, and was still in the Royal Collection in 1906. If this was the case, it must have left the Collection by 1974, when it was last sold in these Rooms. It has been suggested that the model is Dorothy Dene, who appears in so many of Leighton's later works.

The Ormonds place the picture among 'Undated Works' in their Catalogue.
