In April 1939, Fu Baoshi and his family moved to Sichuan and lived in a simple cottage at Jingangpo in the rural part of Chongqing. As a result of his frequent travels in the mountains, Fu developed a fondness for the unique features of Sichuan landscapes. Subsequently, he started to create a series of landscape paintings with a distinctive style that foretold his achievement of establishing of Chinese modern landscape paintings.
Carrying the Qin into the Mountains was a gift from the artist to Dr. Guy Latouche, the Medical Captain of the French military force.
