Lot Essay

The painting depicts a biblical theme of the book Exodus where the Pharaohs daughter discovers the abandoned infant Moses, the later saviour of the Jewish slaves in ancient Egypt. Numerous engravings have been made after this painting during the 19th century. Please compare to a smaller copy after this work by the Russian painter Konstantin Dmitrievich Flavitsky (1830-1866) which is stored in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia.
