Lot Essay

Huang Dan often enchants his ink on paper works with soft emotions - illusory yet nolstalgic -evoked by the them as well as the techniques employed. On the red horseback, a youngster is performing a difficult stunt similar to corde lisse. The seemingly unstable moment combined with a block of crimson, a gripping scene is then staged. The youngster appears to be sensitive, moody, and gentle, yet he is trying his best to keep things under control: the struggles we all have experienced in life and the choices had to be made. After balancing it with ink colour, the wide coverage in crimson is well saturated but not ostentatious, resulting in a subtle and introverted mood. Hunag employees the technique of accumulated ink in layering the colours. A nice touch of hue is an evident effect of ink evening out perfectly. The moisturised feather-like delineation creates a refreshing yet blurred impression for the character: a flower that brightens a rainy day. It is also reminiscent of our childhood simplicity, one that will never return once gone.
