Keinen was a Kyoto Nihonga painter. He studied ukiyo-e style painting first, and then became a pupil of Suzuki Hyakunen (1828-1891). In 1880, he became a professor at the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting and, in 1919, he became a member of the Teikoku Bijutsuin (Imperial Art Academy). He specialized in realistic bird and flower paintings.
