Lot Essay

Théophile Bascle (1824-1882) was a famous winedealer in Bordeaux and a faithful patron, who had collected 83 paintings and 21 watercolours from Jongkind. After Bascle's death in 1883 his collection was succesfully sold at the Hotel Drouot, whereafter Jongkind's reputation rose considerably.
