Lot Essay

John Russell was initially apprenticed to Francis Cotes but set up on his own in 1767. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1770, where he won the Silver medal for figure drawing, exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1768 and then annually at the Royal Academy from 1769 to 1806. He is best known for his portraits in pastel, and was appointed Crayon Painter to King George III and to George, Prince of Wales, in 1788, but also executed portraits in oil such as this portrait.
