Although painting was Lockwood de Forest's true passion, he was well-known during his lifetime as an interior designer. Much like his close friend, Louis Comfort Tiffany, de Forest was heavily influenced by his travels east and much of his inspiration was derived from Indian design. Exquisite examples of the teakwood carvings designed by de Forest are in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt Museum and Olana, the New York State Historic Site and home of Hudson River School artist, Frederic Edwin Church.
