Lot Essay

The Piedmontese Michele Antonio Rapous (or Raposo) almost certainly trained under his brother, Vittorio Amadeo. Michele Antonio specialised in painting still lifes of fruit and flowers in a light, colourful palette, often integrating his paintings within decorative architectural schemes. In 1788 he was appointed court painter to the Royal House of Savoy, and he received numerous commissions to decorate grand Piedmont palazzi, including the hunting lodge at Stupinigi, the Palazzo Chiablese in Turin and the Castle of Moncalieri.
