Percival Leonard Rosseau was born near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Originally a businessman, he chose to enroll at the Académie Julien in Paris. While there, he was influenced by fellow students who painted in the tradition of the Barbizon School. In the Salon of 1904, Rosseau exhibited a painting of Setters, and in the Salon of 1906 he was awarded a Gold Medal for a painting of a panther hunt. From this point, he devoted himself entirely to the painting of dogs and developed a painterly style that captured the action of sporting dogs in the field.
