Lot Essay

This artist was both the son and student of Karl Ernst Christoph Hess. He followed Karl Philipp Prince von Wrede during the Napoleonic campaign of 1813-1815 and in Greece accompanied Prince Othon (son of Max). More importantly, he painted the principal battles of 1812 for the Emperor of Russia and was named a member of The Academy of St. Petersberg. Most known works in public collections are in Munich.
