Lot Essay

On the 11th July 1708 the allied forces of Great Britain, the Netherlands, and the Holy Roman Empire fought the French at the Battle of Oudenarde. This was just one of the many battles during the War of the Spanish Succession to prevent a union of Spain and France.
This painting depicts the routing of the French, by the supreme commander of the Allied force, John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough. Using a two-pronged cavalry attack he managed to encircle the French Army and put them into full retreat.
