Provençal landscape

Lot 54 and lot 55 were both part of the collection of Mrs Boris Anrep, Helen Maitland (1885-1965). Boris Anrep (1883-1969) was a Russian artist who was closely associated with the Bloomsbury Group and is best known for his work in mosaic. His work in the United Kingdom includes the large scale mosaics in the National Gallery, Westminster Cathedral and the Bank of England. He was introduced to his wife, Helen Maitland by Augustus John, whose wife Dorelia was a close friend of Helen's. The couple married in 1918 and had two children but the marriage was unhapppy. Helen met Roger Fry at a party in Vanessa Bell's studio in 1925 and shortly after left her husband to live with Fry for the rest of his life.
